TennCare is a program that provides health coverage to some low-income Tennessee residents.

Medicaid covers families with children and pregnant women, medically needy individuals, the elderly, and people with disabilities, if state and federal guidelines are met. Legal residents who are not U.S. citizens may be eligible for TennCare Medicaid.  Non-citizens who do not have immigration documents cannot enroll in TennCare Medicaid.

  • For certain categories of people, eligibility for TennCare Medicaid is based on the amount of your household income.

You may be eligible for TennCare Medicaid if you are an infant, a child, pregnant, the parent of a dependent, elderly, or disabled and your family meets the Medicaid income standards.

Income eligibility levels for these categories are described below.  Your assets and some expenses also make be taken into account, so you should contact the Tennessee

Low income persons eligible for Medicaid in Tennessee
Category –  Income eligibility (as percent of federal poverty level)
Infant — 185%
Child 1-5 — 133%
Child 6-19 — 100%
Pregnant woman — 185%
Parents
     Working – 80%
     Non-Working — 70%
* Eligibility information was compiled from State Health Facts Online, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and may have changed since this guide was published.  Contact your state Medicaid program for the most up to date information and for other eligibility requirements that may apply.

To get an idea of how your income compares to the federal poverty level, use the federal poverty guideline issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for the year 2007:

Size of Family Unit                       Poverty Guideline (annual income)
               1                                                       $10,210
               2                                                       $13,690
               3                                                       $17,170

 - For larger families add $3,480 for each additional person
 - So, for example, using this guideline, 185% of the federal poverty level for a family of 3 would be an annual income of $31,765, or a monthly income of $2,647.
 - Contact your state Medicaid program for the most up to date information and for other eligibility requirements that may apply.

MACON COUNTY WOMAN MUST REPAY STATE NEARLY $35,000
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A Macon County woman accused of getting TennCare benefits she was not eligible for must repay the state for medical and pharmacy services provided through TennCare.
The Office of Inspector General (OIG) today announced that 35-year old Gena Deshea Satterfield of Hartsville received pre-trial diversion for one-year and she must repay TennCare $34,272.52 for benefits paid on her behalf.
Satterfield was indicted nearly a year ago on the felony theft of services charge and TennCare fraud for not reporting her income – or her husband’s income – in order to obtain TennCare for herself and her two children.  The actual household income would have made them ineligible for TennnCare benefits.
“The state’s healthcare insurance program is for people who are eligible for the program, and it’s disappointing when someone with resources tries to access benefits designed for people who may be less fortunate and in poor health,” Inspector General Deborah Y. Faulkner said. “We are pursuing and prosecuting these type cases all across the state.”
District Attorney General Tom P. Thompson prosecuted this case.
The OIG, which is separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has investigated cases leading to over $2.5 million paid in restitution and recoupment to TennCare, with a total estimated cost avoidance of over $171 million for the TennCare program, according to latest figures.  To date, over 1,000 people have been charged with TennCare fraud.

Through the OIG Cash for Tips Program established by the Legislature, Tennesseans can get cash rewards for TennCare fraud tips that lead to convictions.  Anyone can report suspected TennCare fraud by calling 1-800-433-3982 toll-free from anywhere in Tennessee, or log on to www.tn.gov/tnoig and follow the prompts that read "Report TennCare Fraud."

Former Child Star Lance Kerwin Faces Music for Food Stamp Scam

Kerwin, who played the title role in 'James at 15' on NBC in the late 1970s, was given credit during last Thursday's sentencing for 90 days served and ordered to perform 300 hours of community service for the second-degree theft charge.

Defense attorney Craig De Costa says when Kerwin, 49, applied for the benefits, he omitted in the application that he owned three properties on the mainland.

Kerwin, a pastor at Calvary Chapel in Kapaa and a U-Turn for Christ program leader, said he has already paid $21,822 in restitution.

"I'm sorry," Kerwin said before being sentenced. "The last thing I want to do is to make a statement to minimize what I have done."

Kerwin said his actions affected the community, his fellow church members and his children, and added he hoped his punishment can have a positive effect in his life.

His wife, Yvonne Kerwin, 28, requested a deferred acceptance of her guilty plea for second-degree theft and two counts of unsworn falsification to authorities. She left court with a record that will remain clean if she stays out of trouble with the law. She will also hav
e to pay crime victim compensation fees and complete 300 hours of community service.
